GMC History

GMC, a division of General Motors, is one of America’s most popular makers of trucks and utility vehicles. The Rapid Motor Vehicle Company and Reliance Motor Car Company were both bought by GM in 1909, and eventually merged to form the GMC brand. The name “GMC Truck” was first used in 1912, shortly after the companies combined. In the years following, GMC became a distinct company focused on commercial trucks and vehicles.

GMC became an essential part of the war effort during World War I, providing over 600,000 trucks to the military in the early 1900s. After that, from 1925 to the 1940s, it bought out a company called Yellow Coach and began producing many commercial vehicles including buses, coaches, firetrucks, and ambulances. GMC didn’t stay in these businesses, however; throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the automaker started to pull production of most of its commercial models due to high competition in these fields.

Today, mostly back to its roots, GMC’s main products are trucks, though they also sell sport utility vehicles, crossovers, and a small selection of commercial vans. A highly recognizable top truck brand, GMC has maintained a reputation of style and utility since its inception over a hundred years ago.

GM even released a complete history book of the company called GMC: The First 100 Years in 2002, showcasing GMC’s importance to American history. Remnants of GMC’s participation in both personal and commercial vehicle production can be seen everywhere in current designs and technology, and GMC will doubtless continue to bring excellent vehicles to buyers.
