Buick History

At Freehold Buick GMC, we’re proud to be a part of the legacy of Buick. Since 1903, Buick has been redefining the industry, developing some of the most memorable models to ever hit the market. Now a brand that reaches around the world, we can’t wait to see where Buick will go next.

Buick is one of the oldest car manufacturers in the United States, beginning as the Buick Auto-Vim and Power Company in 1899. This company made automotive parts, and was later made into the Buick Motor Company by David Dunbar Buick in Detroit, Michigan in 1903. At that time, many of the company’s cars were hand built from top to bottom, including the engines. The company eventually became a part of General Motors in 1908.

By 1923, Buick had built over one million vehicles, including the iconic Master and Roadster models. During the Second World War, the company went to work manufacturing tanks, making more than 2,500 in 1942. By the ‘60s, Buick was known worldwide for tailfins, luxury styling, and precision engineering.

The Buick Special remains one of the company’s most memorable cars, produced from 1936 to 1969. From mobsters to bankers, everyone wanted to get their hands on this famous car. The second-generation Special had a Fireball V8 engine, giving it unparalleled performance. In 1962, the Special earned Motor Trend’s Car of the Year award, making it one of the many iconic cars belonging to the Buick legacy.

These days, Buick sells more than one million cars per year and has climbed to the top of the industry as an entry-level luxury manufacturer. In recent years, the company has streamlined its lineup with models like the Enclave, LaCrosse, and Regal. If you want premium luxury and quality engineering, Buick is the way to go.
